Hamrníky: why live here

Where Hamrníky lies

Mariánské Lázně sits at an elevation of 578 metres and is part of the CHKO Slavkovský les protected landscape area — so this is not a town “near the woods”, but a town inside a protected area. Hamrníky is its southern part, strung along třída Vítězství, and forms the transition between the built-up town and open country: houses on one side of the street, ponds, wetland and forest on the other.

The neighbouring municipalities are Velká Hleďsebe with Klimentov, and Drmoul. You can walk from Hamrníky to the spa centre and the colonnade, yet you live away from the spa bustle — and that is the whole point of this address.

Water: the reserve, the ponds and Lido lake

The Hamrnický mokřad nature reserve

Hamrnický mokřad is a declared nature reserve covering 6.64 hectares. It lies on the western edge of Hamrníky between Ohradský rybník and Malý ostrovní rybník, along the Panský potok brook. It is protected mainly for its botany — cranberry, marsh helleborine and early marsh orchid grow here, across extensive wetland communities of meadows, reed beds and bank vegetation.

In practice that means you only have to walk down the hill from the Hamrníky bus stop, a few dozen metres from the building, and you are in it.

Lido swimming lake — 786 metres from the building

Lido is a natural swimming lake in Hamrníky (Na Vyhlídce 56/10), created back in 1932 by adapting a pond. The water surface covers roughly 8.4 hectares and lies at an altitude of 540 metres in the middle of the forest.

• a 250-metre beach — part grass, part sand, with a mostly sandy bottom
• excellent water quality according to the Ministry of Agriculture bathing water profile, with no cyanobacteria
• fewer than 500 visitors a day — even in season it stays a calm place
• football tennis and volleyball pitches, beach volleyball courts, table tennis, badminton
• boat and pedalo hire, sun loungers, showers, changing cabins
• a snack kiosk, a restaurant and cabins with washing facilities

Admission is roughly CZK 90, CZK 45 reduced, free for children under three — check the current price list before the season.

By bike and on foot

Cycle route no. 2137 Mariánské Lázně – Tři Sekery – Nové Mohelno runs straight through Hamrníky. It is 23 kilometres long, up to 34 with the side branches, the climb totals 494 metres and the surface is mostly made-up asphalt tracks. It is of medium difficulty, suited to cross and trekking bikes, and starts in the park by Ferdinandův pramen. From the district it takes you to Drmoul and on southwards.

For ordinary walks the rule is simple: from the building you either go up into the town towards the colonnade, or down to the wetland, the ponds and the forest. Both are on made-up paths and both take minutes, not half a day.

Getting around

The bus stop is 152 metres from the door. Two city bus lines serve Hamrníky:

• line 10: Drmoul – Hamrníky – Vora – Kaufland – Lunapark – Hřbitov
• line 13: Drmoul – Hamrníky – Vora – Centrum – Krakonoš – Zádub-Závišín

The MDML fare is CZK 20 for a single journey, CZK 18 from an electronic wallet and CZK 350 for a thirty-day pass. The railway station is 1.1 km away, 6 minutes by bus. From there the train takes 19 to 25 minutes to Cheb, about an hour and a quarter to Karlovy Vary and 2 hours 26 minutes to Prague on a direct service.

School, shops, services

• Základní škola Vítězství — right in Hamrníky, at tř. Vítězství 29/28, on the same street as the building
• Základní škola Úšovice (Školní nám. 472/3) in the neighbouring district — the largest mainstream primary school in the area: 580 pupils, a preparatory class, an after-school club and a canteen
• Tesco — 1.8 km; Kaufland — on line 10
• The spa centre and the colonnade — within walking distance

What Hamrníky is not

So that what you will not find here is clear too. Hamrníky is not the spa centre — the colonnade is within walking distance, not around the corner. There is no large shopping centre in the district itself. And the baroque manor house of 1706–1708 that stands in Hamrníky is a ruin today: the abandoned building burned down in the summer of 2008, the ceiling paintings are destroyed and the site is closed to the public. We say so up front, because it looks tempting in photographs of the area.

Hamrníky is about something else — about quiet, greenery and water within reach, while the town stays accessible.

Living in Hamrníky

Rezidence Pelikán stands at třída Vítězství 197/38. It is a completely renovated former hotel with 20 one-room flats (1+kk) of 22 m², intended solely for long-term living. Rent is CZK 7,900 and the total is CZK 11,500 a month including all utilities and services, with no estate agency commission. Ten of the twenty flats are available.
